Embracing the Year of Imperfection: A New Approach to Productivity
===
Kelly: [00:00:00] Hello, welcome to the Productivity Genius Podcast. I'm your host, Kelly Fifield. And in this episode, I alluded to it a bit in the last episode, we're going to talk about what your theme for the year might be. My theme for this upcoming year is a year of imperfection, and I'm not intentionally going about my year doing things really poorly and screwing everything up on purpose.
The reason I've selected that myself for my year's theme is because I recognize that when I'm perfecting things, I'm slowing myself down, and I'm not getting helpful things out into the world. It really is, a more of a self centered, energy when I'm perfecting things. It's usually because I want things to be so wonderful that no one will possibly say anything negative about it.
No one will reject it. I won't have to feel bad about it. So it really is a bit of a weakness when I'm trying to perfect things. And it's probably the number one thing that slows me down is spending too much time on [00:01:00] little details that probably don't matter. So, in order to combat that, I was trying to think of what I would want to do instead and when I thought a year of imperfection, when I thought of that as being my theme, I immediately felt a great energy.
It was like, All of this curiosity kind of started coming up and this excitement, all of these positive emotions. I was like, Oh, yeah, if I didn't perfect things, I would move so much more quickly. I'd be able to help so many more people. Well, along that theme, it's 4 25. And I told myself I'd be done work today at 4 30.
And so I've only got five minutes. To record this podcast, if I'm going to follow through with my promise to myself. And normally, I absolutely would not record this at this point. That would, might feel like too much pressure. Plus, I have no makeup on. I'm not looking my best. And I record these on videos.
On Spotify, you can upload them on video. But then I remembered. Oh, shoot. It's the year of imperfection. So that is just the reason to get this done now. So here I am. If you're on [00:02:00] Spotify, no makeup. Fortunately, Loom does give you a little bit of zhuzh, but, um, wanted to show up and record an episode for you, get it done on time and get it out into the world to help you.
Now I asked one of my clients. What she might think her theme for the year would be what would be really? Helpful for her to get all of the things done that she wants to get done and for her She said the key is gonna be consistency And I wanted to check in with her and see how she felt about that Like when you think I'm gonna be consistent How does that feel because for me if that were my theme for the year?
I'm gonna be consistent that to me feels like pressure when I think to myself. I'm gonna be consistent I feel pressure and pressure is a negative emotion. It feels like very stuck to me and it. Probably wouldn't fuel actions that got a lot of things done. So that would not work well for me, but when I questioned her on it, she said it felt great and it is going to help her and focusing on that feels energizing.
So that's a great focus for her. So I'm not suggesting that you take [00:03:00] either of those consistency or imperfection. You want to test your theme on yourself when you think My theme for this year is blank. How does that make you feel? That is the most important piece. And so you just want to, like, play around with it for a while, let it simmer, let it percolate.
It's time for the percolator. and see if you can find a thought, a theme for the year that creates an emotion that will fuel the actions to get all of the things done that you're excited to do this year.
If you want to test out some of the themes, or if you want some help coming up with your theme for the year, I would love to hear from you on Instagram. I'm at Productivity Genius Coach, so you can DM me and we can kind of go back and forth and see if we can come up with a really motivating, exciting
theme for your 2024.
Also in the theme of my year of imperfection, I actually finished my sales page sort of this week for my one on one coaching program. If you want to check that out, I'll put the link in [00:04:00] the show notes. It's actually not finished. So there's a spot right now if you looked now that says click to play, there's a spot for a video.
There's no video there. And normally I would absolutely not share that On the podcast until it was completely done and perfect, but it's the year of imperfection. So you can check that out. Give me some feedback. Let me know what you think. If you're hearing this a little bit in the future, that video will be there.
But if you go and click today, there's no video. There's just a weird space where it says click to play and there's nothing there.
Makes me a little uncomfortable to share that with you, but I'm going to do it anyway because it's my year of imperfection.
If you do decide on a theme and you're willing to share it, I would love to hear it.
If you're cool with it, I'll share it on social media so other people can get inspired by your theme for the year. And with that, I'm done on time at 4
Thank you for listening. I hope your year is off to an amazing start and I'll see you next week.
